Welcome to CVS!
CVS is the MBARI Software Engineering source code repository which resides on the Linux server 'moonjelly'. Someone has requested that you be added to a module (project) in the CVS repository. As a member of these modules, you will have access privileges to any current project whose ownership or group you belong to. If you need to be added to another module in the future, please let me know as I am the CVS system administrator for moonjelly (salamy@mbari.org).
Permissions
Permissions for these modules are set-up so that all files in the module are made writable only for members of the specified group. If someone is not part of a particular group, they will not have access to write to any files under that directory. These permissions are set recursively throughout the project for security purposes.
Password Access
Access to the repository requires another (separate) password. NOTE: To allow you access to the repository, I will need you to supply a cvs repository password.
To do this, access the MBARI network (usually with the command prompt, Cygwin Window, or a Linux Terminal) by logging in to moonjelly via ssh with your standard MBARI password (example: ssh salamy@moonjelly.shore.mbari.org). This will run the script: encryptCVSpw
Follow the onscreen instructions to create an encrypted version of your password. You may put any password in that you wish - even the same one as your standard MBARI network password. That is up to you. The system will then email you a copy of your encrypted password. Please forward that e-mail to me so that I may add/update your password to the repository password list. I will then send you an e-mail when you are able to access the repository.
NOTE:moonjelly is on the NIS server at MBARI so you should be able to access the system through telnet via your main MBARI password. If you cannot access moonjelly for any reason, please let me know.
CVS GUIs
GUIs are the main way users interact with the repository to checkout, edit, and checkin files. I highly recommend the "Free" SmartCVS Client version to access moonjelly. However, there are many other free clients including WinCVS (windows-based), gcvs (Linux-based), MacCVS (Mac-based) should you prefer them. You may also use the command line if you do not wish to use a GUI. I have written up a basic "getting started" document for repository users. At the moment, however, it outlines installing and working with WinCVS only since Windows is the main OS used at MBARI. I am not sure if you plan to use a GUI or command line. If you wish to try out WinCVS, please review the link Setting up WinCVS_1.2. You may also reference the guide should you wish to use the Linux version of the GUI, gcvs, as the menu structure is very similar for both GUIs.

You can also simply "view" the current repository tree structure at: http://moonjelly.shore.mbari.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/ .
